Introduction:
The 12th CACR Information Security Workshop: Privacy & Security:
The Next Wave will be held November 6 & 7, 2003, at the University
of Toronto, Canada. This is the fourth annual conference jointly organized
by the Office of the Information & Privacy Commissioner/Ontario,
the Centre for Innovation Law and Policy (University of Toronto), and
the Centre for Applied Cryptographic Research (University of Waterloo).
Theme:
This year's conference theme, "The Next Wave", brings us the
exploration of what is next regarding privacy. Waves are varied
and unpredictable; their force can be heard in the subtle lapping on
the shore of a small inland lake, or the pounding 70-foot surf
off Hawaii. For some, the next wave is compliance with federal
privacy legislation, for others it is ensuring customer trust
in their organization's personal data management. Still for
others it is preserving privacy rights in a society struggling
with safety and security in the aftermath of terrorism and war.
This year's workshop will showcase both private and public sector
leaders in an interactive case-study approach. Delegates will have
the opportunity to examine the details of managing privacy.
In a companion theme, delegates will get an insight into some of
the privacy enhancing technologies available and coming to market
for organizations that need to manage personal information.
There will be a special law panel and a panel on health informatics
following up on last year's health inquiry led by Justice Krever.
Also, this year we will have a number of speakers from Europe to
sketch out what we can expect to see coming to Canada from across
the pond. In keeping with the ambitious standards of past workshops,
we will have some of the leading practitioners, thinkers, academics,
lawyers and authors discuss their ideas, insights and solutions.
Audience:
The intended audience includes technology and security experts, CIO's,
senior technology executives, health professionals, cryptographers,
engineers, law enforcement, practitioners, academics, private sector
leaders, privacy experts and students.
