CO-OP JOBS - WINTER 2000

Centre for Applied Cryptographic Research
Department of Combinatorics and Optimization
University of Waterloo

Applications are invited for two or three co-op jobs in Winter 2000 to work on the Wireless Security Project at the Centre for Applied Cryptographic Research.

PROJECT:
The Wireless Security Project is being directed by Professor Alfred Menezes in the C&O department. The Wireless Security Group currently consists of 2 co-op students, 1 undergraduate research assistant, 1 graduate student, 1 postdoctoral fellow, and 2 professors. We will be designing, analyzing, and implementing security solutions for various wireless applications on constrained devices such as RIM's Interactive pager, the Palm Pilot, and Rainbow Technologies' iKey. Such applications will include electronic commerce, wireless Internet, and wireless communications.

REQUIREMENTS:
Third or Fourth year standing in any area of Computer Science, Pure Mathematics, Combinatorics and Optimization, or Electrical and Computer Engineering. Extensive C programming skills are a must, as is a strong interest in learning about cryptography, computer security, and their applications. Previous knowledge about cryptography is not required, and all the required background will be provided.

BENEFITS:
We will offer standard co-op salaries of between $2500 and $2800 per month with the normal University benefits. The work environment will be casual but stimulating. Students will be encouraged to attend the weekly cryptography seminar, and will be given ample time to study about cryptography, the relevant mathematics, and its applications. Students who return for a second co-op term will have the opportunity to attend a cryptography or security conference of their choice.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
If you are interested in being interviewed for this job, please contact Frances Hannigan (fhannigan@math.uwaterloo.ca, x4027) to set up an interview.

SOME INFORMATION ABOUT CACR:
CACR was established in June 1998 and has grown rapidly since then to become the largest academic cryptography research group in North America. Full-time faculty members include Gord Agnew, Guang Gong, Anwar Hasan, Alfred Menezes, Mike Mosca, Doug Stinson, and Scott Vanstone. There are also 8 postdoctoral fellows and 4 sabbatical visitors in 1999/2000. Together with numerous short-term visitors, weekly seminars, conferences, and workshops, CACR offers an exciting and vibrant environment for research in cryptography, information security, quantum computing, number theory, and related areas.
